Tinubu Pays Super Falcons $100,000 WAFCON Reward

The National Sports Commission says the players have begun receiving the naira equivalent of the President’s pledge following Nigeria’s 10th continental title, although earlier reports had indicated that the cash rewards were already paid

President Bola Tinubu has fulfilled his promise to reward Nigeria’s Super Falcons with the naira equivalent of $100,000 each following their victory at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), with the National Sports Commission (NSC) announcing that payments have commenced.

The commission disclosed the development in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, November 2, 2026, signed by Kola Daniel, Special Assistant on Media to the NSC Director-General.

The reward was promised after the Super Falcons defeated hosts Morocco 3-2 in the final on July 26, 2025, to claim their 10th WAFCON title and extend their record as Africa’s most successful women’s national team.

Tinubu announced the financial incentive at a reception for the team at the State House in Abuja on July 28, 2025. Under the package, each of the 24 players was promised the naira equivalent of $100,000, while members of the technical crew were to receive $50,000 each.

The President also approved three-bedroom apartments in Abuja and conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on the players and technical team.

Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade thanked Tinubu for honouring the commitment, describing the payment as recognition of the team’s achievement and contribution to Nigerian sports.

The NSC, led by Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade, also commended the President for fulfilling the financial pledge, saying the reward would encourage athletes and recognise sporting excellence.

The commission said the administration’s support for national teams extended beyond cash incentives to include improved athletes’ welfare, international exposure and the hosting of major sporting competitions.

The latest announcement, however, comes amid earlier reports about the timing of the payment.

In July 2026, NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko was quoted as saying that the $100,000 rewards had already been paid into the players’ bank accounts, while the presentation of their housing documents was being arranged.

The commission’s November statement therefore renews attention on the completion and confirmation of the promised financial package, although it does not specify how many players had received the latest payments.

The development follows a similar reward arrangement for Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, after their victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament.

The players also received the naira equivalent of $100,000 each under the Tinubu administration’s reward package.

The Super Falcons’ triumph in Morocco was marked by a dramatic comeback, as Nigeria recovered from a two-goal deficit to defeat the hosts 3-2 in the final.
