Ikpechukwu reportedly died on Thursday, November 5, with the National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Alhaji Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu, confirming the development in a tribute shared on social media.

“Another Legend bows out!! RIP Diewit Ikpechukwu,” Yakubu wrote, describing the actor’s passing as another loss to the Nigerian film industry.

The circumstances surrounding his illness and final days had not been fully disclosed as of Friday.

Ikpechukwu built a career spanning more than 25 years, becoming known for his performances in several Nigerian films, particularly productions that helped define the early years of Nollywood.

His film credits included August Meeting, Royal Palace (2005), The Guilty (2006), Across the River (2006), Python King (2007) and Ìjé Love (2022).

His journey into acting followed an earlier career in football and corporate employment.

In a 2022 interview with The Punch, Ikpechukwu recalled working as a football team manager before joining the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL), where he eventually retired as a senior marketing manager.

He said his interest in acting grew after the National Television Authority in Enugu invited him to participate in the television production Second Chance, alongside veteran comedian Chief Zebrudaya.

His first feature-film appearance came in 1998 when he played a traditional ruler in Evil Men, a production that featured established actors including Pete Edochie, Alex Usifo and Liz Benson.

The opportunity opened doors to further film roles and his involvement in the Actors Guild of Nigeria, where he became the pioneer chairman of its Enugu State chapter.

Beyond his screen performances, Ikpechukwu was known for encouraging young actors to approach the profession with patience, discipline and a willingness to learn different aspects of filmmaking.

He recalled organising seminars during his time as guild chairman to introduce emerging performers to opportunities behind the camera, including work in props management, set management, costume design, make-up and continuity.

“I used to hold seminars to teach these younger ones that there are many things one can do behind the camera and be relevant,” he said in the 2022 interview.

He also cautioned aspiring actors against expecting overnight fame, arguing that dedication and professional development were essential to building sustainable careers in the industry.

Ikpechukwu’s death adds to a difficult period for Nollywood, which has recorded the loss of several established performers in 2026.

His passing is expected to be felt particularly among colleagues and younger actors who benefited from his experience and mentorship.
