The 30-year-old died at 8am on Tuesday, November 3, after being rushed to hospital in critical condition following a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during their Spanish second-division encounter.

The incident occurred during stoppage time at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López in Tenerife, with the match level at 2-2.

Owono had rushed out of his penalty area towards the centre of the pitch to intercept a long ball when his knee struck De Miguel in the chest during their challenge for possession.

The Tenerife forward collapsed unconscious on the pitch, prompting players from both teams to immediately call for medical assistance.

Medical personnel attended to him for several minutes before he was taken away in an ambulance. Reports said he suffered a cardiac arrest during the emergency transfer, but paramedics managed to restore his pulse through resuscitation efforts.

He was subsequently admitted to the intensive care unit at the University Hospital of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The club initially described his condition as stable despite its severity. However, it later announced that his neurological condition had deteriorated before confirming his death on Tuesday morning.

Owono was shown a straight red card following the collision, while the referee abandoned the match shortly afterwards with the score still 2-2.

Several players were visibly distressed, with some of De Miguel’s teammates breaking down in tears as medical personnel attended to him.

In its announcement, Tenerife expressed profound grief over the loss of the forward.

“Racked with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true, from CD Tenerife we communicate the tragic passing of Jesús de Miguel Alameda,” the club said.

“There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this feeling overflowing with sadness.”

The club also expressed solidarity with his family, loved ones and supporters, who were mourning his death.

Andorra president Gerard Piqué also expressed his condolences, while Barcelona, Real Madrid and other Spanish clubs paid tribute to the late footballer.

De Miguel was born in Madrid in 1996 and began his professional career with Leganés B in 2015. He played for several Spanish clubs before joining Tenerife from Castellón ahead of the 2025/26 season.

He scored 11 goals last season and was part of the team that secured Tenerife’s return to Spain’s second division.

As a mark of respect, the Spanish Football Federation postponed all matches scheduled for Tuesday in the Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina competitions.

UEFA also announced that moments of silence would be observed before European matches during the week.
