According to Reuters on Saturday, Villa chairman Nassef Sawiris announced the club’s decision on Friday, describing Carragher’s remarks as “unacceptable insults”.

The controversy followed comments made by Carragher on the Stick to Football podcast, where he told Villa supporters to “shut the f\*\*\* up” and said the club would “never be Manchester United”.

The former England international made the remarks while discussing speculation linking Villa manager Unai Emery with a possible move to Manchester United amid uncertainty surrounding Michael Carrick’s position at Old Trafford.

Carragher argued that football clubs occupied different positions in the game’s hierarchy, with some having greater financial and sporting influence to attract players and managers from other teams.

“I’m not trying to annoy Villa fans but there is a chain in football, whether you like it or not,” he said.

He cited Real Madrid’s signing of Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United as an example of how clubs perceived to be higher in the football hierarchy could attract talent from other sides.

He also argued that clubs below Aston Villa could sign their players or appoint their manager before making the controversial remarks about the supporters.

Responding to the comments, Sawiris said the club would take legal action against the pundit.

“Aston Villa will initiate legal action against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults about the club and its fans,” the chairman said.

He added that the club would not allow anyone to undermine its ambitions in English and European football.

“Aston Villa will not allow anyone to stop our ascension in English and European football,” he said.

However, the club did not disclose the legal basis for the proposed action and had not immediately responded to Reuters’ request for further comment.

Carragher also did not initially respond to the news agency’s request but later sought to ease the tension, maintaining that his remarks were made in jest.

“It was a joke after the stick Villa fans have given me over saying Emery may fancy joining Man Utd,” he wrote in a social media post.

He also shared clips of previous comments in which he praised Emery and Aston Villa, including his reaction to the club’s victory in the 2026 Europa League final in Istanbul.

Carragher further reiterated his admiration for the Spanish manager, describing him as one of the best coaches in the Premier League.
